Palo Alto Art Center Fall 2010 Exhibits

October 18th, 2010 by admin

For Fall 2010, the Palo Alto Art Center will be displaying three exciting exhibits, running from Sept. 25 through Dec. 12, 2010, for all to enjoy.

So what can you expect to see? Their website gives an excellent summary of the three compelling exhibits :

In Focus: Collecting Photography showcases the unique character of, and stories behind, four diverse photography collections formed by art professionals who live in the Bay Area. Light from the Underground is a photographic essay by Colette Campbell-Jones based on communal memories collected from miners and families in South Wales. Paintings from Haiti presents selections from the collection of Dr. Ralph S. Greco. Many of the paintings make palpable the invisible powers of belief that have sustained a culture through centuries of adversity.

As covered in an earlier post, the Art Center is scheduled to undergo a significant remodel and renovation. In order to facilitate this transformation, the Palo Alto Art Center Foundation is kicking off a community-wide “Where Art Transforms” capital campaign to raise the funds necessary to renovate the Art Center. This project recently received two generous gifts from Ann Bowers and the Packard Foundation and is very close to its funding requirements .

To learn more about the campaign and how you can help, click here or watch their video below.

Altaire loves all that Palo Alto has to offer and we are very excited to see the proposed renovations to the Palo Alto Art Center become a reality.

Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival

October 15th, 2010 by admin

When you think of Fall what comes to mind? Cooler weather, the leaves changing color and pumpkins…..lots of pumpkins.

For those of you who would like to celebrate the Fall season in style, look no further than the quaint coastal community of Half Moon Bay. The 40th Annual Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival takes place this weekend, October 16 & 17 from 9am – 5pm.

The festival has become quite an event, with a loyal following.  Here is a  little background (from the official festival site) describing  how the small coastal community became synonymous with pumpkins in all shapes and sizes.

The pumpkin boom can be traced back to growers in the area who began to plant pumpkins in the 1930′s. In the early 30’s, teenager John Arata and his brother Clarence began planting pumpkin seeds to feed the family’s hogs. One day, they were hauling some of their pumpkins along Highway One back to the farm when a passing motorist stopped and asked if he could buy a few. The Arata’s sold the pumpkins for a quarter and a booming pumpkin-picking business and tourist attraction was born.

And the tradition continues on today as more than 3,000 tons of pumpkins are grown each year by 15 or so commercial growers in the Half Moon Bay area. They ship pumpkins all over the United States and sell to many of the large retailers in the Bay Area.
Although the focus is on pumpkins, there is something for everyone at the festival…..parades, costume contests, family activities and great food and drink await you as well.

One more reason Altaire loves life on the peninsula. Have fun!

October 4th, 2010 by admin

Palo Alto Art Center to get new look

August 26th, 2010 by Altaire Townhomes

The Palo Alto Art Center will undergo a long-awaited $7 million facility remodel and upgrade. The renovation will include aesthetic improvements, building code compliance upgrades and the creation of a children’s wing and new courtyard. Work is scheduled to begin in April 2011.

According to a recent Palo Alto Online article, the Art Center Director, Karen Kienzle, is especially looking forward to the new childrens’ wing.

“When it opened in 1971, the Art Center was intended to be primarily a place for adults, but now more than half our visitors are kids,” she said. “We serve around 7,000 children a year and we’re really bursting at the seams,” she added, describing long lines of paint-covered kids patiently waiting for the sole sink (installed much higher than is easily reachable for children) in one of the rooms used for classes. She said new sinks would be kid-friendly and foot-operated.

The building is the former home of the city hall and its initial design was never considered for its current use as a modern art gallery.

Indoor livability and environmental quality will be a large part of the planned renovation, which is aiming for the environmental “LEED (Leadership In Energy and Environmental Design) Silver” certification.  “Green” improvements will include wraparound decks made of recycled woods, rubber and cork, and counters incorporating recycled paper.

For more images of the planned renovation, click on the image below.

Altaire is excited about the responsible changes that are being made to community assets with a vision towards livability and the future.

Palo Alto Festival of the Arts this weekend 8.28/29

August 24th, 2010 by admin

Artists and craftspeople come together at this annual community extravaganza.  August 28 & 29, 2010 • 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. • University Avenue, Palo Alto

Attracting over 150,000 people from throughout the peninsula, California and the West Coast, the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts celebrates its 29th year on the tree-lined University Avenue in beautiful downtown Palo Alto.

What makes this festival such a success? The answer is simple – it’s the three hundred fine artists and crafters whose display booths are placed back-to-back along University Avenue. This all culminates in attracting a high percentage of fine artists and crafters whose work you’ll see only at a few select shows on the West Coast.

The Italian Street Painting Expo, always a huge hit with the crowd, will again offer fifty chalk artists creating larger-than-life works of art all weekend long on Tasso Street. This year’s new beneficiary of the Italian Street Painting Expo’s Kids Chalk-a-Lot area is the Palo Alto Art Center Foundation.

And it is more than just art. Music, food and drink await all who attend.  There are two stages , on Waverley & Webster, as well as street corner entertainment. Four food courts and 3 wine and beer booths can also be found at this years event. That is a lot of ground to cover.  You can find a map of the festival here to help plan the festivities.

Looking for a particular artist?  A complete list of participating artists can be found on the official website.

What a great way to get out an enjoy a summer weekend.
