Holiday Season To-Do’s in Palo Alto!

December 18th, 2010 by admin

credit:christmastreelane.org

Looking for a break from all that holiday shopping?

Stop by the Palo Alto Museum of American Heritage (MOAH) for their exhibit with a youthful, whimsical feel–”Living LEGO-cy: Legendary LEGOS and Terrific Trains.” Everyone loves trains and this exhibit won’t disappoint. Together with the Bay Area LEGO User Group and the Bay Area LEGO Train Club, the MOAH presents its annual holiday display, featuring a 12.5-by-25-foot scenic layout with multiple trains running through magnificent city, farm and suburban scenes, including recreations of many actual Bay Area locations. Pictures of the display can be found here. This exhibit runs through Jan. 9 at the MOAH, located at 351 Homer Ave. Admission is free for MOAH members and an affordable $2 for non-members. The museum is open Friday-Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

And of course it wouldn’t be the holiday season without lights….lots of lights. The tradition continues this year–Fulton Street (off Embarcadero Road), better known as the “Christmas Tree Lane” of Palo Alto, is now lit up for the holidays. This long-standing tradition, which began in 1940, features fun activities with miniature Christmas trees lining the street, the famed, larger-than-life toy soldier and, of course, some of the most beautifully decorated homes in all of the Bay Area. Images can be found here. Christmas Tree Lane will be lighted each night from 5:00 pm to 11 pm. through December 31.

Altaire loves being a part of the Palo Alto community and we wish you and your family a happy holiday season.

Pantone’s 2011 Color of the Year

December 13th, 2010 by admin

One of the easiest ways to add a little personality to a new home is with a fresh coat of paint. But picking a paint color can be a daunting task. It’s a tricky balance between lighting, personality, mood and current trends. Are you one of those people who feels overwhelmed by the process of picking “the right color” and are left with a dozen swatches on walls and no direction? Pantone to the rescue! The leader in color and design recently announced their much-anticipated color of the year.

Pantone’s 2011 Color of The Year – PANTONE 18-2120 Honeysuckle. Pantone’s website describes the vibrant color as:

Energizing Honeysuckle lifts spirits and imparts confidence to meet life’s ongoing challenges.

A Color for All Seasons. Courageous. Confident. Vital. A brave new color, for a brave new world. Let the bold spirit of Honeysuckle infuse you, lift you and carry you through the year. It’s a color for every day — with nothing “everyday” about it.

So how does one incorporate this playful color into an interior design theme? Their article goes on to say:

Honeysuckle is upbeat and dynamic when used on large areas like the entry area of a house or an apartment. It is an appetite and conversation stimulant when used on the dining room walls. In the kitchen, it adds a fun touch on the table in placemats and other linens (patterned or solid), colored glassware, candles and small appliances. Honeysuckle is a great color to cover up shabby kitchen cabinets, or, if that’s too much of a color statement for you, try repainting knobs and drawer pulls. But be warned – once you try this arresting shade, it can become addictive.

You can read the entire article at the Pantone site here.

Happy Decorating & Painting from the Altaire Team!

Nola Reopens After Million-Dollar Remodel

December 8th, 2010 by Altaire Townhomes

credit:nolas.com

‘N’awlins’ restaurant, Nola, opened its doors once again after a significant remodel of the popular restaurant. Inspired by its namesake, the southern city of New Orleans, Nola boasts an expanded food and cocktail menus, modern new lounge, a colorful Spanish-inspired fountain and an impressive compliment of large high-definition television sets for the patron’s enjoyment. Nola owner, Greg St. Claire, showcased the six week, million-dollar remodel earlier this week.

The heart and soul of Nola has not changed a bit – gumbo served as Mississippi Blues play in the background.  But there are some artistic changes that patrons will immediately notice.  The remodel/renovation includes an impressive art collection. According to a recent patch article, St. Claire is quite proud of the display. “I probably have the largest collection of folk art from the American South this side of the Mississippi,” St. Claire said. “Only a fraction of it is on display here.”

The building itself adds to the ambiance that is Nola.  The structure is actually “part of the historic registry,” St. Claire said and its history seems custom-made for the popular current restaurant and lounge. According to St. Claire, a Spaniard named Pedro de Lemos originally built the two-story building in the early 20th century after he moved to Palo Alto from New Orleans.

So what can you find when you dine at Nola?  Their website says it all : Our menu consists of Creole, Cajun, and Southwestern cuisine. New Orleans favorites, such as hurricanes, fresh oysters, gumbo, seafood jambalaya, and étouffée, are just a few of the classics you will find. And the reviews confirm and explain the popularity of this unique dining experience in Palo Alto:

“Great food , great atmosphere , outstanding and helpful service” – boorah.com … “… fun bar and atmosphere” – dine.com … “Great food, great ambiance” – zagat.com … “Excellent service!” – dine.com … “Very fun place” – dine.com

The variety of culinary options on the Peninsula is staggering; Palo Alto is indeed a foodie-heaven.  Just one more reason Altaire loves calling Palo Alto “home”.

Stanford is Orange Bowl bound!

December 6th, 2010 by Altaire Townhomes

Stanford is off to Florida where they will face off against Virgina Tech in the Orange Bowl in Miami on Janaury 3, 2011.  The Stanford football team has come a long way under the guidance of head coach, Jim Harbaugh, who inherited a program that posted a 1 -11 season prior to his hiring and now have an impressive 11-1 season, now at #4 in the BCS national ranking. This Orange Bowl should be an excellent game; the two teams have never played and Virginia Tech dominated the Atlantic Coast division, beating traditional powerhouse teams such as Miami and Florida State.

In a recent mercurynews.com article, Coach Harbaugh discussed the Orange Bowl challenge. “It’s a great bowl, and it’s a great reward for our players,” said coach Jim Harbaugh. “Now it’s known where we’re going, and our intent is to win it.”

Good Luck, Stanford.  We will be rooting for you!

In other local athletic news and not to be outdone by the Stanford Football program, Palo Alto’s High girls’ volleyball team ended an incredible season, posting many firsts for its volleyball program -  The Vikings won the SCVAL De Anza Division title, captured their first-ever Central Coast Section Division I crown, won their first Northern California championship and qualified for an appearance in the state finals for the first time. On Saturday the Vikings rallied for a thrilling five-set victory over Long Beach Poly in the CIF Division I state finals at the San Jose State Event Center. Quite an accomplishment and an incredible ending to an amazing season. Congratulations Vikings! A local paloaltoonline.com article describing this amazing athletic feat can be found here.

It’s The Most Wonderful Time of The Year!

November 22nd, 2010 by Altaire Townhomes

credit: surlatable.com

The holidays are upon us. Time to forget about how the rest of the year flew by and turn our attention to gearing up for some holiday cheer and festivities. What better way to usher in the holidays than a tree lighting ceremony where you can do your holiday shopping?

On Saturday, November 27, from 5-7pm Stanford Shopping Center is having a Tree Lighting Ceremony.  A great family event to kick-start your holiday season. SFGATE.com has an excellent summary of what awaits you and your family at this year’s lighting ceremony:

Join Stanford Shopping Center, Holly Berry, the Holiday Fairy and her singing and dancing holiday trees for a musical evening of Christmas delight! Bop to the beat of everyone’s favorite holiday tunes as Holly Berry and old St. Nick lead the countdown to the illumination of the entire Center and our giant Christmas Tree! After the performance, follow the characters to Center Pavilion for photos with Santa and seasonal goodies!

And for those of you who would like a little indoor activity to ward off the winter chill, Sur La Table at Town and Country Village has a Gingerbread Decorating Party in December.  A great treat for the little ones and those of us who are all grown up but still kids at heart.

The gingerbread house, gumdrops, candy canes, icing and other decorative goodies, are all included.  All you need to bring is imagination and creativity. At the end of the party, you’ll be able to bring your gingerbread masterpiece home for the holidays.  A light snack will also be served.

Our neighbors at the OFJCC has a calendar of Hanukkah events to celebrate the holiday.

Happy Holidays from Altaire!

Homes are still available starting at $449,900, so come by for a tour our beautiful models and seize the opportunity to call our lovely community HOME. We are nearing completion at Altaire and putting the final touches on our community – stay tuned for an upcoming celebration day…

Palo Alto gets its own Street Eats Fest @ Edgewood Plaza

November 14th, 2010 by Altaire Townhomes

People make their orders at the HapaSF truck, which serves organic Filipino cuisine, during the Edgewood Eats event at Edgewood Shopping Center in Palo Alto on Monday, Sept. 20, 2010. Seven gourmet food trucks served their dishes at the typically empty plaza, turning it into a trendy and busy food court. Event organizer Susie Hwang estimated that 350 people were at the foodie gathering by 5:30 p.m. (Kirstina Sangsahachart/ Daily News)

If you think that the food cart craze has only hit large metropolitan areas along the likes of Portland, San Francisco and San Jose, think again! Palo Alto is drawing some amazingly talented chefs that have opted to hit the road to bring tasty cuisine directly to their fans and followers on social channels like twitter and facebook, catering specialty events and venturing where gastro options may be lacking.

The Peninsula/Silicon Valley and Palo Alto in particular is prime territory for food carts to feed hungry students and plugged-in techies that are short on time for lunch or opt to bring dinner home to the family (many let you order take-out online!)

Recently, Palo Alto’s Edgewood Plaza made news with its new organized Foodie event called, “Edgewood Eats”.  7 Gourmet (and well known) trucks transformed the vacant shopping lot , serving up dinner to the tune of  around 350 people!  The Plaza launched the weekly event on September 13th, but plans to scale back in winter months, only to ramp back up again in warmer weather.  You can follow the event at http://www.facebook.com/EdgewoodEatsAltaire Palo Alto has also made Edgewood Eats a favorite on facebook for your convenience.

“… Among the vendors at Edgewood Plaza on Monday were Curry Up Now with its Indian wraps and rice bowls; MoGo BBQ with its Korean-inspired Mexican food; and RoliRoti with its spit-roasted chicken and potatoes. Kara’s Cupcakes was there to satiate those craving something sweet. –”
