Connoisseurs’ Marketplace 2010

Those long days of Summer are here and you know what that means….it is Bay Area festival season. We can think of no better way to spend a sunny weekend day than with a fine collection of exhibits, great music and wonderful food & drink.

If this type of venue sounds appealing to you, head to downtown Menlo Park for the 24th Annual Connoisseurs’ Marketplace, July 17-18. This year’s event will feature something for everyone – world-class art by 250 of America’s top artists, two days of great music, engaging chefs’ demos, fabulous food and drink, tons of fun for kids, artisan specialty food purveyors, a new collector car show, home and garden exhibits, health and wellness displays and an organic and green products showcase.

Our Neighboring Art Gallery

Altaire offers a balanced life with easy access to live music, theater, fitness, wellness and culture just steps from your front door at Palo Alto’s new OFJCC. The finest exhibits in visual arts are offered at the Phyllis and Harvey Koch Art Gallery in the Albert and Janet Schultz Cultural Arts Center and throughout the Campus. Receptions are held on opening day and hosted by the artist or exhibit curator.

What’s new in the visual arts?
In “The Spirit of Spring”, the vibrancy of nature, animals, women, dance and flowers is on display through art at the OFJCC through the month of August. Be sure to drop in to view the work of five local artists, presenting their pieces in the Goldman Sports & Wellness lobby.

29th Annual Summer Festival & Chili Cook-off July 4

The 4th of July tradition continues as we celebrate Independence Day at the Palo Alto Summer Festival & Chili Cook off. Celebrating all that is wonderful about summer, the festival attracts thousands of participants, of all ages, who love a little Independence Day celebration, sunshine and of course chili!

Prepare your taste buds for an intense culinary cook off as a number of teams battle it out for the chili championship. And there is more than just chili. There are a number of others events including: Live music by the band Blues at 11, line dancing with Hedy McAdams, children’s activities, food vendors, and more all taking place from 12 – 5pm. The chili tasting starts at 1:30pm. Admission is free and tasting kits will be available to purchase for a nominal fee.

Do you think that your secret chili recipe has the “mixins” to stand the heat of competition? This year’s Chili Cook-off is the perfect chance to try it out. Awards will be presented for the following categories: best booth, best spirit and best chili in three divisions: Corporate, Open and Vegetarian.

Altaire is a pet-friendly community and our greater community of Palo Alto offers our canine friends a number of parks and outdoor spaces to socialize and enjoy life here as much as our homeowners do.

Since so many of you love your four-legged best friend, we thoughts we’d mention a fun event we stumbled upon… Pinot with Fido at Mountain Winery June 20th from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Just a short drive from your home at Altaire, this event allows you to bring your pet along for an afternoon of wine tasting at the picturesque winery.

Happy Memorial Day

A bit of history behind Memorial Day. Originally called “Decoration Day”, the national holiday began in 1865 as a way to honor fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. Memorial Day, as we celebrate it today, has become an occasion to honor fallen American soldiers from all wars.

Today, we recognize and honor their service and sacrifice in a number of different ways, from reverent to celebratory. Some gather with loved ones and family for parades and bbq, while others visit local bay area memorial sites to pay their respects. A list of bay area memorial day events can be found here.

Happy Memorial Day from the Altaire Team. As a reminder, we will be closed today in observance of the holiday.

Best Nearby Spot for a Playdate!

Looking for a great nearby playdate location? The Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo has been voted best spot for a playdate! “The Junior Museum & Zoo is a place where children and their caregivers come to explore, discover, create and play. Through hands-on science exhibits and a diverse community of live animals, we seek to engage a child’s curiosity for science and nature.” (City of Palo Alto)

Save the date – opening soon is the much anticipated Bobcat Ridge! Friends of JMZ raised over $450,000 to design and build Bobcat Ridge, a new home for bobcats “Rufus and Tule”. The exhibit will open on June 19, 2010. Members will enjoy the 9 – 10 am Sneak Peak hour with breakfast treats. All visitors are welcome for the opening between 10 am – 12 pm, including a Ribbon Cutting ceremony and lots of face painting fun.
