What’s on the calendar? To Life!

To Life! is a unique annual event that showcases the diversity of Jewish culture through art, music, dance and food. This one-day celebration of art and community attracts around 10,000 people from a variety of backgrounds who want to honor Jewish heritage and learn about the many community resources offered by Bay Area Jewish organizations.

After a one-year hiatus, the To Life! Festival is back!

Happy Birthday JCC!

This weekend our friend and neighbor, Oshman Family JCC, is celebrating their one year birthday with a number of treats throughout the Labor Day weekend. They are also ushering in Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, with a Tuesday, September 7, celebration which includes traditional apples and honey.

If you miss out on this week’s festivities, don’t worry. The JCC has an entire list of activities for this coming Fall 2010. You can download their fall catalog here (large file) or check their website for upcoming events. Altaire is so very lucky to have such a wonderful neighbor.

Firebird Dancers Final 2009-2010 Performance at OFJCC

Under the direction of Lotta Lysaya Burton, the award-winning Firebird Dance Theatre has been performing its original choreography, continually winning over larger and larger audiences locally and internationally. Taught by dedicated and talented instructors, their repertoire of dances and classes has quite a broad appeal as their unique program is a fusion of modern, folk, lyrical, ballet, and ballroom dance.

Firebird was founded at the Palo Alto JCC in 1991 by world-renowned choreographer Roza Lysaya. Now, 20 years later, Firebird is returning home for a special anniversary performance at the OFJCC to celebrate the love of dance in the place where it was born.

Watch the final Firebird performance of the 2009-2010 season. In a full-length set, they will be performing a program of selected signature dances from years past as well as much of the new choreography from this season.

“On the Town” – Jake Oken-Berg and Friends in Concert

What’s new in our community neighborhood? Enjoy live outdoor concerts all summer for FREE! On July 31st @ 7:30pm, combining jazz and pop piano styles with powerful vocals, Jake Oken-Berg will be playing live just steps from Altaire! Some of the West Coast’s most talented musicians, will be joining Jake on stage – including: Robert PeArt (guitar), Jeff Koch (bass and guitar) and Brud Giles (drums). “Oken-Berg never fails to sound unpresumptuous and heartfelt. It’s emotional music without a trace of irony.” —The Portland Mercury

Grab a friend, meet your neighbors and join the fun in the Jessica L. Saal Town Square. BYOLC – bring your lawn chair and don’t forget a picnic dinner for perfect summer outdoor dining. New to Altaire or Palo Alto? On The Town Summer Series is a great place to mingle and meet new people this summer. Treats from The Flying Falafel are also available to enjoy during the concert – check out their website here.

Jazz Series at the JCC

Interested in Jazz?

Whether you have a passing interest or want to explore more about the rich traditions of Jazz, our neighbor, Palo Alto’s Oshman JCC, has a jazz series you won’t want to miss!

Taught by jazz pianist and educator Mike Greensill, along with special guest artists, the series consists of three 60-minute classes and the final 90-minute concert will include some history, plenty of music, and a lot of fun.

Best of all, the classes are designed for novice jazz listeners, experts… and the simply curious; all are welcome. The series begins this Wednesday, June 23rd at 7:00 PM.

A brief description of the first class from the JCC event page:

Class 1: What is Jazz?

Jazz is America’s first original art form. We’ll explore its history from the early days in New Orleans to the contemporary scene in New York and beyond. Along the way, we’ll discover diverse styles like swing, bebop, and more.

Musical demonstrations by Mike Greensill, piano; plus recorded examples.

June 23, 7:00 PM, Schultz Cultural Arts Hall

Classes are $15 for members and $18 for Non-members. Concert is $18 for member and $23 for Non-Members. The classes may be taken individually or as a series. Register Online!
