Palo Alto gets its own Street Eats Fest @ Edgewood Plaza

November 14th, 2010 by Altaire Townhomes

People make their orders at the HapaSF truck, which serves organic Filipino cuisine, during the Edgewood Eats event at Edgewood Shopping Center in Palo Alto on Monday, Sept. 20, 2010. Seven gourmet food trucks served their dishes at the typically empty plaza, turning it into a trendy and busy food court. Event organizer Susie Hwang estimated that 350 people were at the foodie gathering by 5:30 p.m. (Kirstina Sangsahachart/ Daily News)

If you think that the food cart craze has only hit large metropolitan areas along the likes of Portland, San Francisco and San Jose, think again! Palo Alto is drawing some amazingly talented chefs that have opted to hit the road to bring tasty cuisine directly to their fans and followers on social channels like twitter and facebook, catering specialty events and venturing where gastro options may be lacking.

The Peninsula/Silicon Valley and Palo Alto in particular is prime territory for food carts to feed hungry students and plugged-in techies that are short on time for lunch or opt to bring dinner home to the family (many let you order take-out online!)

Recently, Palo Alto’s Edgewood Plaza made news with its new organized Foodie event called, “Edgewood Eats”.  7 Gourmet (and well known) trucks transformed the vacant shopping lot , serving up dinner to the tune of  around 350 people!  The Plaza launched the weekly event on September 13th, but plans to scale back in winter months, only to ramp back up again in warmer weather.  You can follow the event at http://www.facebook.com/EdgewoodEatsAltaire Palo Alto has also made Edgewood Eats a favorite on facebook for your convenience.

“… Among the vendors at Edgewood Plaza on Monday were Curry Up Now with its Indian wraps and rice bowls; MoGo BBQ with its Korean-inspired Mexican food; and RoliRoti with its spit-roasted chicken and potatoes. Kara’s Cupcakes was there to satiate those craving something sweet. –”

NEW – Local Mobile Mole to-go!

October 25th, 2010 by Altaire Townhomes

TheOaxacanKitchen.com

Known for their Mole,  Four Oaxacan moles to be exact (red, black, yellow, green) plus dishes from that region such as molotes and tlayudas are served by husband/wife team Ron and Zaida Kent. The Kent’s will now be known locally as Mole to-go!

The Oaxacan Kitchen in Palo Alto Goes Mobile! As reported by the Mercury News, “The Oaxacan Kitchen in Palo Alto is pulling up stakes and hitting the road. In a restaurant van, naturally. In two years, Ron and Zaida Kent have made their restaurant the Peninsula’s go-to spot for a rainbow of moles (negro, amarillo, verde and coloradito).“   — Full Article
Here is what some fans on Yelp have to say –

“I find that that the flavors are quite different than those of the mexican food that most are used to. In other words, this is not your usual tex-mex! Oaxaca is known for their moles and indeed, their moles here are delicious! They use fresh ingredients always and it shines in their food!” — Gladys B.

“I had never heard of “Oaxacan” food so I was a little skeptical at first.  Even moreso when I saw the menu was full of spicy foods (I’m a white chick!).  BUT, I scored with the special of the day being beef short rib.  It was so incredibly tender and juicy and flavorful, and OH SO YUMMY!  I’m officially sold on “grass fed beef” being superior.  The meat was fantastic.” – Lil E.

The good news for fans? The Kents will still be serving up specialties at the Palo Alto Farmers’ Market and offering cooking classes, as well as specialty catering for events!
