We are extremely fortunate to have the OFJCC as a neighbor at Altaire. Besides their incredible recreational facilities, they offer a rich variety of cultural and entertainment venues each week. From discussions, classes, and workshops to live concerts and book club events, and even a friendly game of bunco -there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Start off the New Year right!

Getting a jump-start on your New Year’s resolutions? If it includes health, wellness, fitness or work-life balance…you’re in luck! We stumbled on two great local options to start off the new year right.

The Palo Alto JCC is just steps from your front door at Altaire and they just posted a special holiday schedule to begin 2011 on the right path! More info can be found here.

If you enjoy walking or running, what better way to usher in the new year than with a run/walk that benefits the fight against global hunger.

World Runners is sponsoring their 5th annual New Year’s Day Run for a Healthy World.

When: Saturday, January 01, 2011 @ 9:30 AM (9:30 AM 10K, 9:45 AM 5K run/walk)
Where: Palo Alto Baylands Athletic Center, 1900 Geng Road Palo Alto
Fees: $30 online and $35 on race day, both with t-shirt

Race Overview: Start/finish at Baylands Athletic Center, 1900 Geng Road at Embarcadero in Palo Alto on USAT&F certified loop courses. Over Baylands levees and through the marsh lands on mostly dirt roads.

About World Runners – World Runners’ purpose is to make a difference in the world by raising funds for programs to end hunger and poverty in the world while advancing lifelong fitness.

In observance of the holiday, our sales center will be closed on Thursday and Friday, but will resume normal hours on Saturday, November 27th.

Halloween at Gamble Garden

The autumn chill is in the air so you know what that means……Halloween is just around the corner.  If you are looking for something to get you ready for the Halloween season a nice option is to take your little ghouls & goblins to the Halloween Haunt at Gamble Garden Mansion.

When: Friday, October 29th, 6:30 to 8:00PM

Where: Gamble Garden Mansion

Fee: $10/person for members and $15/person for non-members. Reservations are required.

This event is suitable for the little trick-or-treaters, ages 4-10, accompanied by an adult. Younger visitors may enjoy coming earlier when there is more daylight. Space is limited and reservations are required. You may register for this event here.

Film Festival Comes to Palo Alto + OFJCC

The Silicon Valley Film Festival is launching an exciting 19th season soon! Saturday evening films will be held at our neighbor – Palo Alto JCC and the Cubberley Community Theatre in Palo Alto.

Saturday, October 16th @ 8 pm -Zrubavel, OFJCC

Saturday, October 30th @ 8 pm – Eyes Wide Open, OFJCC

Saturday, November 6th @ 8 pm – Inside Hana’s Suitcase, OFJCC

Enjoy this preview of Zrubavel, a boy who immigrated with his family from Ethiopia, and who dreams of becoming a director of successful films. He manages to cope in a poor, crime and drug-ridden neighborhood. His devoted grandfather struggles to instill Ethiopian values.

Special Event: After the film, hear from Barbara Ribakove Gordon, director of the North American Conference on Ethiopian Jewry (NACOEJ).

What’s on the calendar? To Life!

To Life! is a unique annual event that showcases the diversity of Jewish culture through art, music, dance and food. This one-day celebration of art and community attracts around 10,000 people from a variety of backgrounds who want to honor Jewish heritage and learn about the many community resources offered by Bay Area Jewish organizations.

October 10, 2010 | 11:00 AM-5:00 PM | California Avenue, Palo Alto

After a one-year hiatus, the To Life! Festival is back!

On Sunday, October 10, 2010, To Life! will return to California Avenue in Palo Alto for a fun-filled day of music, dance, art, family activities and of course, food!

Happy Birthday JCC!

This weekend our friend and neighbor, Oshman Family JCC, is celebrating their one year birthday with a number of treats throughout the Labor Day weekend. They are also ushering in Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, with a Tuesday, September 7, celebration which includes traditional apples and honey.

If you miss out on this week’s festivities, don’t worry. The JCC has an entire list of activities for this coming Fall 2010. You can download their fall catalog here (large file) or check their website for upcoming events.  Altaire is so very lucky to have such a wonderful neighbor.

Jazz Series at the JCC

Interested in Jazz?

Whether you have a passing interest or want to explore more about the rich traditions of Jazz, our neighbor, Palo Alto’s Oshman JCC, has a jazz series you won’t want to miss!

Taught by jazz pianist and educator Mike Greensill, along with special guest artists, the series consists of three 60-minute classes and the final 90-minute concert will include some history, plenty of music, and a lot of fun.

Best of all, the classes are designed for novice jazz listeners, experts… and the simply curious; all are welcome. The series begins this Wednesday, June 23rd at 7:00 PM.

A brief description of the first class from the JCC event page:

Class 1: What is Jazz?

Jazz is America’s first original art form. We’ll explore its history from the early days in New Orleans to the contemporary scene in New York and beyond. Along the way, we’ll discover diverse styles like swing, bebop, and more.

Musical demonstrations by Mike Greensill, piano; plus recorded examples.

June 23, 7:00 PM, Schultz Cultural Arts Hall

Classes are $15 for members and $18 for Non-members. Concert is $18 for member and $23 for Non-Members. The classes may be taken individually or as a series. Register Online!
